Volcano on Japanese island of Kuchinoerabu erupts for 2nd straight day

A volcano on Kuchinoerabu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan erupted again on Friday for the second day in a row, local media reported.The latest eruption occurred at 9:43 am local time (0043 GMT), said Japanese Meteorological Agency. It came after Thursday's eruption that lasted for about 30 minutes from 12:17 pm and another one at 4:31 pm the same day.

All 137 islanders have been forced to evacuate the area after a violent volcanic eruption on May 29 that spewed black smoke and toxic gasses as many as six miles high in the atmosphere.

The agency has raised the volcano alert level for Kuchinoerabu island to five, the highest on its scale.
