Typhoon Kujira has affected 193,000 people in South China's Hainan Province as torrential rain damaged crops and caused economic losses, Chinese flood control and drought relief authorities said Wednesday. Some 111,000 mu (7,400 hectares) of crops were damaged by heavy rain brought by the typhoon, causing economic losses worth 88 million yuan ($14.4 million) in Hainan as of Wednesday, according to the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

It said in a statement that the province has witnessed a daily average of 102 mm of rain since Sunday, with some parts seeing up to 732 mm.

The rain has helped relieve a prolonged drought in the province, and no casualties have been reported due to the typhoon, which made landfall on Monday evening.

The National Meteorological Center forecast earlier on Wednesday that Kujira will move northward at a speed of about 15 km per hour, bringing strong winds to the South China Sea and east of Hainan Island.

Affected by Kujira, downpours are forecast to hit parts of Yunnan Province, Hainan Island and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region until Thursday afternoon.
