As we move into July, many regions in China are being hit by heat waves. In Wuhan, capital of Central China's Hubei Province and one of the "Four Furnaces," more than 1,000 students couldn't bear the sweltering summer heat and crammed into their university's stadium for a sleepover as the temperature rose to over 35 degrees Celsius and their dormitories were not air-conditioned. They brought their own bedding and the hall was partitioned to separate males and females. Pictures released of the sleepover show that it was like a gigantic pajama party. While some were dissatisfied, most students were pleased that the university made the stadium available since in many other schools students can only suffer in their hot dormitories without even access to electric fans. Many universities in China built their dormitories decades ago without air-conditioners. However, times have changed. At a time when universities are using every means available to lure excellent students, they should upgrade their infrastructure and enable students to live and study in a comfortable environment.
