Zambian, Kenyan leaders pledge closer ties

Zambian leader Edgar Lungu and his visiting Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta held bilateral talks on Friday afternoon in which they expressed satisfaction over the warm relations existing between the two countries and pledged commitment to cement the ties.The talks were held at State House as the Kenyan leader began his two-day official visit to Zambia.

During the talks, the two leaders pledged to continue enhancing cooperation in different areas aimed at promoting trade and investment, according to a communique issued after the talks.

The Zambian leader has commended his Kenyan counterpart for the pivotal role Kenya was playing in securing peace and security in the east African region while the Kenyan leader praised the support from Zambia following terrorist attacks in that country.

The Zambian leader said African leaders should ensure that they work together to promote peace, security and stability on the continent, adding that leaders should strategize on how to deal with terrorism that was threatening stability on the continent.

According to the Zambian leader, the two countries share the same aspiration of fighting poverty and hunger hence the need to share ideas on how to tackle various problems.

On his part, the Kenyan leader lauded the warm relations that have existed between the two countries and pledged commitment to promote the relations.

The two leaders have since reaffirmed their commitment to the maintenance of democracy, peace and security, particularly in the Great Lakes Region.

They also signed a memorandum of understanding in four areas of cooperation which includes tourism, agriculture, police cooperation and gender equality.

Kenyatta, who is accompanied by his Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs Amina Mohamed and other senior government officials, is also expected to officially open the 51st Zambia International Trade Fair.

He becomes the first foreign leader to visit Zambia since Lungu won a presidential election held in January this year following the death of President Michael Sata.
