Stage swallows choir mid-song at Anti-Fascist War concert

A choir of university students made a smash performance after a stage collapsed during a contest.

The ensemble was singing at the Southwest University of Science and Technology in Mianyang, Sichuan Province on Friday evening when part of the stage gave way, thepaper.cn reported.

More than half of the 60-member choir from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture disappeared under the stage during the event marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Fascist War.

No injuries were reported.

Video footage shows the bizarre moment when those standing in the last three rows fell from view just as the chorus reached the dramatic refrain of "Tunnel Warfare," a song that recounts how Chinese villagers thwarted Japanese invaders using a network of tunnels during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-45).

The video has gone viral on Chinese social media, where many pointed out the comedic confluence that resulted in the malfunction.

"What a coincidence, a stage collapses during a song about tunnels, performed by a choir of engineering and architecture students," wrote "Sushixuyu." "Lucky for them they weren't singing 'Landmine Warfare,'" wrote a Weibo user.

This is not the first time a stage fell apart mid-performance this year. Eight people were injured when a stage holding an 80-strong choir collapsed in Bijie, Guizhou Province, on May 9.
