‘Monster Hunt’ pulls up behind Chinese box office champion ‘Fast & Furious 7’

According to the official Sina Weibo account of domestic film Monster Hunt, as of Saturday night the film had earned 2 billion yuan ($322 million) in the Chinese mainland, beating the mainland box office No.2 record holder Transformers 4 (1.98 billion yuan).

While Monster Hunt has become one of only two films to earn more than 2 billion yuan in the mainland, Hollywood action film Fast & Furious 7 remains at the top with 2.43 billion yuan.  

Premiering on July 23, the fantasy action film earned 173 million yuan on its opening day (including revenue from early partial releases), and 1 billion yuan by its eighth day. It became China's highest-earning domestic film by its 11th day with 1.27 billion yuan, surpassing Lost in Thailand, which earned 1.26 billion yuan in the beginning of 2013.

In theaters for more than three weeks, Monster Hunt has maintained a steady daily gross average of nearly 300 million yuan.
