Manic Mourinho fails to prevent Chelsea from being humbled by City

The Premier League is only in week two and already, it has seen a clash between heavyweights. On Sunday night, last season's top two teams Chelsea and Manchester City faced each other in what turned out to be a rout.

There were signs in the first week that the Blues may not be as formidable as before but no one could have predicted that City would have trounced them 3-0. Chelsea were made to look slow, disorganized and outclassed as City bossed the play and enjoyed numerous chances before staking a 1-0 halftime lead. Some fine saves by Chelsea keeper prevented the scoreline from being great.

So pronounced was the domination by City that Chelsea captain John Terry was hauled off at halftime by manager Jose Mourinho for the first time ever. Meanwhile, Chelsea stars like Eden Hazard and Diego Costa underperformed as did defender Branislav Ivanovic who was partly at fault for City's last two goals.

However, even the anticipated on-field action was augmented by off-field controversy from Mourinho after he publicly castigated his own medical staff.

In the draw with Swansea, Chelsea were down to 10 men when Hazard went down. The referee waved the medical team on, which resulted in the player having to come off and Chelsea having to play with nine men for a few minutes. Mourinho was furious and criticized his team doctor and physio for not taking the team's numerical disadvantage into account.

Of course, Mourinho was wrong about this because one should never order doctors to prioritize a soccer game scoreline over a player's health. Mourinho increased his misjudgment by banning the team doctor and physio from being on the bench, which meant a new medical staff for the City game.

As such, it was very apt on Sunday's game when first, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill was bloodied by a clash with his goalie and had to come off for treatment, then a few minutes later, Chelsea forward Costa had to be treated for an elbow from a City player, which resulted in Chelsea almost playing with nine men temporarily.

It is clear that nothing shuts Mourinho up given his declaration after the defeat to City that his team had actually been better and that the result was "fake."

It is dangerous to underestimate Mourinho and Chelsea especially since the season is still young. But given the past two weeks, it is clear Mourinho should focus on boosting his team's play rather than mouthing off about doctors and opponents.
