Fan Changlong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, met with US National Security Advisor Susan Rice in Beijing on Friday, with the pair vowing greater military cooperation.

Hailing the smooth development of military-to-military relations between China and the United States, Fan said the two sides have maintained frequent high-level reciprocal visits and the two militaries are cooperating more.

Positive progress has been made in establishing a mutual reporting mechanism on major military operations and a code of conduct on naval and air military encounters, he said.

The two sides should strive to manage differences and control risks, and continue to advance a new type of military relations between major powers, according to the Chinese military official.

President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States in September. Fan suggested the two sides work together to ensure the success of this important occasion.

Rice, who serves as a top foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama, said the United States attaches high importance to Xi's visit.

She expressed the hope that the two sides can strengthen dialogue and communication and cooperate more.
