Chinese President Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to the US later this month is expected to bring surprising results, Chinese ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai, told the media on Saturday.

Noting that the two sides have more common interests than differences, the ambassador said he expected very positive outcomes from the anticipated meeting of the two heads.

"I believe that President Xi's visit will produce fruitful results, and the two sides are still working intensely on these results. And I hope they will be a surprise for everyone," Cui Tiankai said in an interview with Chinese media in Maryland.

He explained that even though the Sino-US relationship has many differences and contradictions because of different national conditions, the common interests between the two are clearly greater than the differences.

"If the two could grasp these growing common needs and interests, strengthen cooperation and manage the differences in a constructive way, the Sino-US relationship will continue to stay on a healthy, stable and sustainable path," he said.

Ni Feng, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Sunday that the visit will be crucial to the Sino-US relationship and will set the tone for the leaders on the future of the two countries, adding that the leaders are very likely to discuss items such as trade cooperation, global climate and cyberspace security.

Meanwhile, Cui said he hoped the US could make a wise choice as some local media reported that the sanctions against some Chinese individuals and commercial entities may come next week as punishment for their involvement in the previous cyber attacks.

Ni said the sanctions may affect Chinese exportation and he urged the US to stop focusing only on the contradictions, which is threatening the Sino-US relationship. He suggested the US focus instead on the areas of cooperation.
