Animal rights group enters custody battle for acid-scarred dog

An animal rights group is fighting for custody of a dog that had previously been disfigured with acid and was being paraded by its new owner while begging on the streets in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, local media reported.

Uploaded videos show the group of angry animal activists and the sobbing woman tussling for the dog. "This is not the first time we've fought for ownership of this dog," one of the activists told the Shenyang Evening News. "We wanted to take the dog away, but [its adopter] refused and threatened us by biting her own wrist."

According to Xiao Hang, a leader of the group, he instantly recognized the dog and the woman from photos uploaded by angry dog lovers.

He said the stray dog had been scarred by acid five months ago and was later adopted by the woman from a pet rescue group.

"The dog's eyelids were so severely mutilated that it can't even close its eyes. It has been five months since this fraud adopted the dog, and she has done nothing to treat it," said Xiao.

The group accuses the woman of making a tidy profit by using the animal to drum up sympathy from passersby, local media reported.

The footage sparked outrage on social media. "Animal rights laws are still far off in our country. The government should make more of an effort to protect those poor animals," one netizen wrote.
