Super Saturday sees goals galore as United go top, Spurs crush City

It was "Super Saturday" on the weekend as a whopping 35 goals were scored in eight games in the Premiership. Arsenal and Leicester served up a tasty goalfest of a game, Aston Villa took Liverpool to the brink, Manchester United went top of the league with a 3-0 win over Sunderland and even Newcastle got into the act with a 2-2 draw against Chelsea. But the most stunning game had to be Spurs' 4-1 demolition of Manchester City.

Fans will have loved all the attacking soccer and plentiful scoring as no game featured less than three goals.

Certainly, the managers of Spurs, Arsenal, United and Liverpool enjoyed the weekend. United are now top of the table while Liverpool picked up a much-needed win, bringing relief to Brendan Rodgers. Arsenal beat a game Leicester courtesy of a fine hat trick by Alexis Sanchez. Spurs saw Harry Kane score his first goal of the season.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini must be aghast given how his team has suddenly morphed from worldbeaters to being battered by Spurs and losers of three of their last four games. Just two weeks ago, City were flying high and leading the league after winning five of five. Then defeat to Juventus in the Champions League led to a loss to West Ham the following weekend and then Saturday's defeat.

Injuries played a significant part with goalkeeper Joe Hart, captain Vincent Kompany and David Silva all out. Those are certainly among the best of City's squad but it is a damning sign that the club seems to fall apart when it lacks a few key players, especially Kompany.

Chelsea's Jose Mourinho must also be feeling some frustration. His team had to come back against second-to-last Newcastle from two goals down just to snatch a draw. At least this time, Mourinho went off on his own team rather than opposing coaches or his medical staff, rating their performance "minus one out of 10" and that he would have made six substitutions if he was allowed to. There is something troubling about Chelsea, that even a win a week  ago against an Arsenal team that played with 10 men from the start of the second half cannot remedy.

While many of us can rejoice at the sight of Chelsea, the defending champions, still being in the bottom half of the table, the truth is many teams are within striking distance of each other. Just six points separate 16th-place Bournemouth, with seven points, from third-place West Ham.
