An earthquake initially measured at 5.5 magnitude jolted off Fukushima Prefecture in northeastern Japan at around 3:04 p.m. local time Wednesday without triggering tsunami alert, according to Japan's weather agency.
The quake was registered at level 4 in Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Fukushima, with tremor felt in Tohoku and Kanto area, including Tokyo.
The epicenter was initially determined at 37.3 degree north latitude, 141.2 degree east longitude, with a depth of 30 km, said the Japan Meteorological Agency.
There were no immediate reports on injuries and damage around the quake-affected area.
Japan sits on the Pacific earthquake belt and will witness several major quakes every year. A monstrous quake hit off Fukushima Prefecture in March 2011 and triggered devastating tsunami which caused great lost to the country.
