Chinese Navy Commander Wu Shengli expressed deep concern during a Thursday video talk with the US naval commander on the South China Sea, Xinhua reported Friday.

"Such dangerous and provocative acts have threatened China's sovereignty and security and harmed regional peace and stability," Admiral Wu Shengli, commander of the People's Liberation Army's Navy, said during talks with his US counterpart Admiral Jonathan Richardson.

On Tuesday, the US destroyer USS Lassen entered within 12 nautical miles of Zhubi Reef without the permission of the Chinese government.

Wu pointed out that if the US continued such actions, tensions would rise between the two countries' naval and air forces, leading to a "possible clash."

China will "have to take all necessary measures to safeguard sovereignty and security" if the US persists on going its own way and ignoring China's concern, he said.

Wu said it is a well-known fact and the country's consistent stance that China has "irrefutable" sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and its adjacent waters.
