An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's Yogyakarta province on Wednesday afternoon.

Tremors were also felt in several cities in neighboring province of Central Java.

The epicenter, with a depth of 93 km, was detected 120 km southwest of Bantul, Yogyakarta, at 8.97 degrees south latitude and 110.19 degrees east longitude, said Indonesia's Meteorology, Geophysics, Climatology Agency (BMKG).

The agency said tremors from the earthquake were also felt in Central Java's cities of Batang, Pekalongan, Magelang, Wonosobo and Kebumen.

Reports said the tremors were strongly felt in the affected cities, making people panic and out of their houses. No significant damage has been reported so far.

Yogyakarta's Bantul saw a deadly earthquake in 2006. The disaster measures at 6.2 magnitude by the United States Geological Service (USGS) killed more than 6,000 people, destroyed buildings in the Indonesia's ancient cultural city.
