Morocco said on Monday that security forces have dismantled a new cell affiliated to the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

The cell, made up of four people, was plotting to carry out 'terrorist' operations in Morocco using explosives, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The leader of the cell had close contacts with Moroccan fighters in the ranks of the IS in Syria and Iraq, and was coordinating with the militant group to get logistic support to conduct its terrorist plans, it added.

Two days earlier, an IS suspect was arrested in the Moroccan city of Nador, just a few miles away from Spain.

The arrested man was plotting to carry out a terror attack in Morocco or in a church in Europe.

Morocco has beefed up security measures following Paris attacks that left 132 people dead and hundreds others injured, according to local media.
