The Chinese mainland is willing to communicate with political parties or organizations in Taiwan as long as they accept the "1992 Consensus" endorsing the one-China principle, said an official on Wednesday.

An Fengshan, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a press conference that as long as parties agree on the "core meaning" of the 1992 Consensus, cross-Strait exchanges should continue.

The spokesman made the statement while responding to a question on whether Taiwan's opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) would arrange meetings between leaders of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait if the party wins the upcoming island election in January 2016.

An said that adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence have been the common political ground for both sides, adding that the core of the consensus is to oppose any "country-to-country" relations across the Strait.

All political parties and organizations in Taiwan should "face up to" the consensus, An said.

Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou met earlier this month in Singapore, the first time that leaders from the two sides of the Taiwan Strait shook hands in 66 years.

In their capacities as "leaders of the two sides," Xi and Ma addressed each other only as "mister" throughout their meeting.
