An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted 69 kilometers northwest of Taltal, Chile, at 21:00:21 GMT Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 28.95 km, was initially determined to be at 24.8081 degrees south latitude and 70.7206 degrees west longitude.

The Chilean national oceanographic service ruled out a tsunami alert, saying the earthquake did not have the characteristics to generate a massive seismic sea wave.
