Facilities for elderly people in Beijing will be improved by 2020, according to an announcement by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs, reported the Beijing Daily.

The bureau said that Beijing's population is aging quickly, and people over age 60 will reach 4 million by 2020. According to projections, about 3.84 million elderly people will be living in their own homes, and about 160,000 others will live in nursing homes.

The bureau said about 50,000 new beds will be added over the next five years, until the total number of beds in Beijing's nursing homes reaches 160,000. The bureau is also requiring all communities and residential buildings to improve basic amenities for elderly people.
