A record number of 5,039 migrants and refugees applied for asylum in Denmark in November, official data showed Monday.

The figure marked a rise of 44 percent compared to that in October, where some 3,500 asylum applications were received.

"We are in an extraordinary situation with too many asylum seekers in Denmark and the rest of Europe. And that is why the government has recently launched a major asylum package with a variety of austerity measures in the area," Denmark's Minister for Integration Inger Stoejberg said in a statement announcing the figures.

However, data also showed that the number of registered asylum seekers decreased some 36 percent in the first 13 days of December as compared to that of November.

"While November was a record, the figures of asylum seekers appear to fall in December, and it will hopefully continue as we are tightening the conditions for refugees and asylum seekers," said Stoejberg.

The Swedish government already in November imposed temporary border controls to cope with the influx of refugees.

In early December, the Danish parliament adopted a carrier liability law so that the major transport operators would carry out ID checks on foreigners traveling to Denmark in case of temporary border controls.
