A fter a national tour, the fourth version of classic opera The White-haired Girl has now become the first Chinese 3D opera film.

Adapted from a folk story, the opera was written in 1945 and soon became a hit not only for its moving story but also for its unique mixture of Chinese and Western opera styles. A renowned art work that has been adapted in various media, a number of actresses have portrayed the lead character Xi'er over the decades, to include Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan.

With 2015 marking the 70th anniversary of the work's creation, a new version, starring thirtysomething actress Lei Jia and a group of younger actors, was brought to the stage this year and later filmed as a 3D movie by the Beijing Film Academy. He Jingzhi, famous poet and one of the original writers of The White-haired Girl was involved in the script while Peng stepped into the role of the new work's artistic director.

The 3D film held its premiere in Beijing on Saturday and is set to release nationwide in theaters next year.
