A reported sales ban of Chinese products in North Korea is false as those products continue to be sold, according to many Chinese people based in North Korea.

The North Korean government has banned its citizens from "using products imported from China since December, and authorities have been monitoring their use of Chinese goods, cracking down on people in the streets," South Korea-based The Korea Times newspaper reported on Monday.

"That's impossible, since most of North Korea's daily products, food and cars are imported from China," Zhou Zhiran, a Pyongyang-based correspondent of the People's Daily, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

"At many shops in Pyongyang, I found that Chinese products continue to be sold and nothing has changed," noted Zhou. Many Chinese people in North Korea also told Zhou that they did not receive any information on the ban or have observed any changes.

Chinese products are very competitive and popular in the North Korean market due to their good quality and low prices, added Zhou.

Zhou added that although many domestically-made products have emerged in the North Korea's market as part of the country's self-independence campaign, the majority of products are imported from other countries, such as China and Russia.

Lu Rui, a Pyongyang-based correspondent of the Xinhua News Agency, said it is unlikely that the ban will be implemented as China remains North Korea's largest trade partner.

"I have seen many made-in-China products when I visited a Yongyang resident this year, including an electric cooker, range hood and cooking oil," Lu told the Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV on Tuesday.
