The High People's Court in Jilin Province has upheld the life sentence for bribery of the former secretary to Chongqing's ex-Party chief Bo Xilai, media reported on Monday.

The court rejected the appeal of Wu Wenkang, former deputy secretary general of Chongqing's Party committee in 2015, after the Intermediate People's Court in Changchun, Jilin Province found him guilty in November 2014 of accepting bribes worth 20.2 million yuan ($3.08 million) between 1999 and 2012, according to the Jilin High People's Court on January 8.

He was also deprived of his political rights, and his personal assets were seized in 2014.

Wu appealed for a lighter sentence, claiming that he had surrendered to authorities, and disclosed Bo's abuse of power during an investigation into Wang Lijun, then Chongqing's police chief and vice mayor.

Wu took advantage of the post as Bo's secretary by helping approve a land developer in 1994 when Bo was the mayor of Dalian, Liaoning Province.

In its verdict, the court said Wu did not turn himself in when he confessed his crimes.

Bo Xilai, former secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and a former member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, was also sentenced to life for bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power in November 2013. Bo was guilty of accepting bribes worth 20.44 million yuan ($3.3 million), either personally or through family members.
