Indonesian police and military personnel will conduct a hunt for gunmen who allegedly shot dead four workers in Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua on Tuesday, local deputy police chief said.

Deputy Police Chief of Papua province Albert Roja said some 70 policemen and soldiers would start to chase the alleged perpetrators on Wednesday.

The police officer said the militant group has been frequently launched attacks on civilians in the areas.

Albert said the gunmen launched the strikes when the workers were constructing a road.

"Three workers were dead on the scene, one died during evacuation. Three others escaped from the shooting," he said.

Papua is home to a rebellion group the Free Papua Movement.
