Tibet website backs Facebook meetings with China leaders

A State-owned news website on Tibet voiced its support for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday after the founder faced criticism from Tibetan separatists over the company's increased contacts with China.

Zuckerberg met with Liu Yunshan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on March 19, and Liu expressed his hope that Facebook could "work with Chinese Internet enterprises to enhance exchanges and share experiences," the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The same day, Voice of Tibet, a website supporting "Tibet independence," published an article calling Zuckerberg's activities a shame and claimed that "moral values are more important than economic interests."

Facebook was criticized by Tibetan separatists in December 2014 when a video of a Tibetan monk's self-immolation was deleted for failing to meet Facebook's standards, The New York Times reported.

"What goes against their expectations is that Zuckerberg seems not bothered by all this," said tibet.cn, citing meetings between the CEO and Chinese leaders, including a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2015.

"In 2015, European leaders were reluctant to meet with the Dalai Lama, which would risk souring ties with China … The Tibet question has become a hot potato for Western countries. Exiled Tibetan separatists saw Facebook as their last non-governmental resort to 'fight back.' By furiously calling the company's boss 'a shame' only proves they have been marginalized by the international community," tibet.cn said.
