In a bid to grab more share in the vast Chinese market for premium sedans, Mercedes-Benz introduced its first locally produced E-Class L luxury sedan at the Beijing auto show.

At the auto show, the German carmaker showcased a wide range of models, including the all-new GLC Sport SUV, the all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 S sedan, and the new Mercedes-Benz SLC Coupe. But the highlight was the locally produced E-Class L sedan.

The long-wheelbase version of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan was specifically designed for Chinese customers, with new luxury design features and the latest technologies, Hubertus Troska, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG who's responsible for China operations, said at a press conference Monday.

The all-new E-Class L has an impressive interior, with more spacious and comfortable seats, luxurious designs and modern technologies, including a wide screen that drivers can use to create personal driving designs and choose from 64 lighting colors to illuminate the interior space, according to Troska.

The luxury sedan, which is set to hit the market in the fall, also brings Chinese customers state-of-the-art intelligent technologies, including autonomous driving features. For example, the all-new E-Class L has a Drive Pilot feature, which allows the car to follow cars ahead of it, and stop in road traffic, at a speed up to 210 kilometers per hour.

In addition, the all-new E-Class L can change lanes and overtake autonomously, and brake accordingly if it recognizes pedestrians or crossing traffic. The luxury sedan can also be parked from outside of the vehicle, using a smartphone app.

"We believe that we have taken great care for the all-new E-Class L, focusing on what Chinese customers truly appreciate," Troska said, adding the all-new E-Class L will contribute greatly to sales growth in China.

Sales for Mercedes-Benz in China grew by 39 percent year-on-year to about 105,000 in the first quarter of 2016, according to the company.

Despite a slowdown in the Chinese economy and vehicle market, Mercedes-Benz said it's confident that new products like the all-new E-Class L will help the company continue sales growth this year.

The economic transition taking place in China can present more opportunities for Mercedes, as the Chinese economy will be more sustainable and society will be more prosperous, Troska said.

Zhang Yu, a Shanghai-based independent analyst, said that although the high-end car market saw a slump this year, the all-new E-Class "will no doubt be a hit in the Chinese market," because of its S-Class technologies.
