A long-distance bus caught fire while in service in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, leaving eight dead and five injured. Local police have confirmed the fire was the result of hijacking and arson.

The bus was travelling on the Fuzhou-Yinchuan Highway and caught fire as it was about to enter a tunnel in Xi'an's Lantian county, leading to a temporary shutdown of several highway entrances that affected areas as much as 40 kilometers away, according to news site thepaper.cn.

The report also cited witnesses as saying that the bus had burned down in its metal frame.
