'Women-only' airport security checks met with social media sarcasm

Wuhan, Hubei Province, is the latest Chinese city to speed up airport security checks with "women-only" lanes.

Wuhan Tianhe International Airport follows up Beijing, Shenzhen and Kunming with the segregated lanes that aims to prevent bottlenecking at checkpoints.

"Usually, female passengers take more time to go through security check in the airport," officials at Tianhe told Chutian Metropolis Daily.

The pilot program also seeks to address privacy concerns among female passengers, such as while taking off shoes and articles of clothing during security checks.

"The lanes can protect female passengers' privacy," airport officials said.

The program was met with mixed reviews on social media.

"How about when guys take off their clothes and shoes? Don't they deserve privacy?" a netizen commented.

"I don't get the point of a women-only lane. I suggest the airport instead opens special lanes for the elderly, infirm, sick, disabled and pregnant passengers," another one said.

"I am so glad to see our society is improving. Women deserve more protection [from our society]," one netizen wrote.

Beijing Capital International Airport officially opened its women-only security lanes in March 2016 after a three-month trial, the Beijing Daily reported.

Sixteen female guards were assigned at three women-only stations to screen passengers.

An airport employee said that the new lanes reduce the entire security check process to less than one minute.
