Crazy season finally ends after Spurs shocker and Old Trafford scare

The Premier League was supposed to end Sunday night but in keeping with the season's theme of unpredictability, it actually didn't.

Manchester United's game with Bournemouth was called off due to a suspicious package found in a toilet at Old Trafford and then played Tuesday, but the rest of the league was relieved to be finished with this season.

The story of the season is no doubt Leicester's fairytale run to become league champions. But there were a multitude of story lines that made this the most compelling season in a while. We had the resurgence of a young Spurs team that achieved their highest placing in decades, the struggles of Premiership heavyweights Manchester City and Manchester United and the humiliation of defending champions Chelsea whose season effectively ended halfway through.

Arsenal tried to provide some continuity by doing their customary tease with challenging for the title, before faltering and then tightening things to end up with their usual top-four finish. But more on Spurs and Arsenal a little later.

At the bottom of the table, two proud and historic clubs tumbled into the Championship. Aston Villa's sad demise was long incoming while Newcastle at least struggled to stay. The Premiership landscape next season will be a little depleted at not having Villa Park and St. James' Park in the league.

That said, Spurs served up the most shocking result on Sunday with their 5-1 defeat to already relegated Newcastle. When one considers that the game was 2-1 when Newcastle's Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off, Tottenham's ineptitude against 10 men seems unreal. The way how Spurs have seemingly switched off since their 2-2 meltdown against Chelsea on May 2 must raise concerns.

It is understandable that they may have lost some motivation since seeing Leicester win the title a few weeks ago, but to earn only two points in their last four games and come third in a two-horse race, as media pundits said, is surely pathetic.

As it is, Arsenal finished second for the first time since 2005, which almost makes their season seem respectable. In hindsight, one can say they have been steadily improving their league position by one every year since 2014 when they finished fourth. However, Arsenal's final placing flatters them and cannot erase the weak results this season when they arguably went backwards compared to the previous season. Olivier Giroud may have scored a hattrick on Sunday against Villa but he went missing for much of the second half of this season and cannot be relied on to be the main striker.

The season was officially over after United beat Bournemouth on Tuesday night, extending this already crazy season by a little bit. It's a good thing because most fans probably need to get their breaths back after a wild ride.
