The Column Hall is the largest room located on the second floor of Warsaw’s Presidential Palace, and it has witnessed some of the most important events in the history of Poland. Here, in 1955, the People’s Republic of Poland, the Soviet Union and other communist bloc states signed the Warsaw Pact. In 1989, representatives of the Polish government held talks with Solidarity-linked opposition in the room, commonly known as the Round Table Talks. Ten years later, Poland’s accession treaty to NATO was signed in the Column Hall, with the country’s accession treaty to the EU ratified here in 2003. Photo: Song Shengxia/GT

This round table was originally located in the Column Hall on the second floor, though it was later moved to the right wing of the Presidential Palace because of the frequent use of the Column Hall. Cards with the names of the participants in the Round Table Talks still sit atop the table, many of whom have passed away. Photo: Song Shengxia/GT

The chapel in the Presidential Palace is a place of prayer for the President, the First Lady, the ministers of the Chancellery and invited guests. The plaque on the wall commemorates the tragic death of then Polish president Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash in Western Russia on April 10, 2010. Kaczynski was killed along with his wife, the governor of the central bank, senior military commanders and other high-profile officials, as they flew from Warsaw to Smolensk, Western Russia to commemorate the Katyn massacre. Each year on April 10, the Polish people hold memorials to commemorate the tragedy. Photo: Song Shengxia/GT
