Lionel Messi missed penalty as Chile beat Argentina 4-2 on penalty shoot-out to win their second straight Copa America title in New Jersey on Sunday.

The two sides were 0-0 after 90 minutes and 30-minute extra time. Sergio Romero saved Chile's first penalty attempt from Arturo Vidal before Messi putting his penalty kick over the crossbar. Claudio Bravo then saved a penalty from Argentina's Lucas Biglia and Francisco Silva converted Chile's final shot to seal the win.

"A lot of people said we were not favorites. A lot of people said that we were actually helped during the Copa America last year," Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said. "But we finally proved we can win it at a neutral venue and we are ready to keep working hard to achieve more things in the future."

Argentina's last major title win came in the 1993 Copa America. They have now lost the final of a major tournament in three consecutive summers. Argentina lost the World Cup final to Germany in extra time in 2014 and then suffered two consecutive Copa America loss to Chile in 2015 and 2016 as Messi, maybe the greatest player of all time, has never won a major trophy for Argentina.
