Sudan and South Sudan agreed on Sunday to extend a joint agreement on transit of humanitarian aid through Sudanese territory to the needy in the South, Sudan's Ashorooq TV website reported.

The two sides decided to extend the agreement for extra six months as of the 1st of current July until the end of next December, the report said.

"This agreement is an extension for the standing cooperation between the two countries in fields of humanitarian work, and comes within the context of contribution to the stability of the situations in South Sudan," Ahmed Mohamed Adam, Sudan's Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, was quoted as saying.

"The Sudanese government has kept on providing the necessary facilitations and support for the affected Southern Sudanese citizens across the Border States," he noted.

For his part, Robert Reng, Charge d'Affaires at South Sudan Embassy in Khartoum, praised the efforts made by Sudan to facilitate and provide services for the affected population in South Sudan.

Khartoum and Juba signed the agreement on transit of humanitarian aid via Sudanese territory to the South in 2014.

A joint technical committee, including Sudan, South Sudan and the World Food Programme, is supervising the humanitarian aid transport to the South via land, air and river routes.

South Sudan is facing severe food scarcity due to the civil war which broke out in the new-born state in 2013.
