The three-day 2016 Eco-Forum Global (EFG) culminated with the release of the 2016 Guiyang Consensus on July 10th, which stresses environment-ethics and the balanced relationship between ecological protection and economic development.

It’s essential for green development to maintain a balance between ecological protection and economic development. The old pattern of “pollute first, clean up later” and heavily depending on natural resources to alleviate poverty should be avoided. Sacrificing the environment to jump start the economy should not be repeated, according to the statement.

The forum tackled integrating ecology and poverty reduction, and international experts explored the role of ecology in addressing the many dimensions of poverty alleviation, such as health, economic well-being, disasters, water, sanitation and energy needs.

“As China has launched targeted measures to poverty alleviation in the context of eco-civilization construction, poverty alleviation should not destroy the environment and should adhere to the principle of green development,” said Ye Xingqing, a researcher at the rural economy center of China Development of Research Center.

As China’s only state-level international conference the forum focused on eco-civilization, environment-ethics and philosophy are also highly stressed. In a sub-forum themed eco-morality, a hundred scholars, officials and experts discussed how to encourage people to apply ethics to the natural world and the relationship between humans and the earth.

“Man’s harmony with nature can only be awakened through eco-conscience and eco-consciousness, and by enhancing eco-responsibility,” said Wang Jingfu, chairman of the China Association for the Advancement of Eco-morality.

More than a thousand ecological experts, NGO leaders and businesses, as well as politicians from 73 countries and regions attended the annual gathering in Guiyang, which has been a national pioneer in ecological development, echoing the concept of sustainable development advocated by the central government.
