2016 Olympic Games host Rio de Janeiro offers more than just a sultry samba beat, it also boasts some of the finest cuisine the world over.

Feijoada

Brazil's star national dish is feijoada, a thick hearty stew of black beans and pork accompanied by white rice, farofa (toasted manioc flour), thinly shredded cabbage and orange slices. The dish is traditionally eaten on Saturdays.

Churrascaria

A Brazilian dining experience popular both at home and abroad. Customers at this Brazilian-style steakhouse pay a fixed price for a wide range of barbecued meat dishes, all served on sword-like skewers.

Quindim

A popular dessert influenced by Portuguese cuisine, made with sugar, egg yolk and coconut.

Tapioca crepes

A Brazilian breakfast favorite and snack dish made from cheese, with chocolate, banana and beef all popular fillings.

Bolinhos de bacalhau

Another popular Portuguese-inspired dish, these oval-shaped turnovers are filled with meat or shrimp.

Casquinha de siri

Rio is a paradise for seafood lovers, with casquinha de siri, succulent crab meat served in its own shell, just one of many delicacies on offer.

Coxinhas

Brazilian chicken croquettes, a snack dish commonly served both roadside and on the beach.

Caipirinha

While Brazilians love nothing more than a cold beer on a hot summer day, their national drink is caipirinha, a cocktail containing cachaca (alcohol made from sugarcane), lime and sugar.

Cafezinho

A strong cup of coffee is the drink favored by many Brazilians to finish off their meals.
