Chinese contemporary dance production Family, an adaptation of the classic novel of the same name by writer Ba Jin, was staged at the National Theatre for the Performing Arts in Beijing on Wednesday and Thursday nights, according to a press release sent to the Global Times on Friday.

Staged by the Sichuan Dance and Song Troupe and funded by the 2015 National Art Fund, the show is the only dance performance taking part in this year's National Stage Key Classics project, which aims to promote Chinese stage productions.

Since its debut in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in November, the show has been staged more than 40 times in the province.

The show is also expected to head out on a national tour to major cities throughout China before the end of the year.

Like the book, the show focuses on the struggles of three brothers as their progressive aspirations clash with the traditional conservative values of their upper-class family.
