Zhongyuan Festival, or the Ghost Festival, falls on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It’s a festival celebrated to honor family ancestors. Residents of Ziyuan county of South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region release lotus-shaped lanterns on the Zijiang River to lure the ghosts away from their homes. Also, to keep the angry spirits amused, local people stage street operas and other forms of public entertainment. Photos: VCG
