These stunning pictures show the Pyramids of Meroë, located on Sudan’s Nile about 200 kilometers north of Khartoum. Built between 720 and 300 BC, the nearly 200 pyramids on the Meroe site outnumber their larger Egyptian cousins. The Meroe pyramids were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. But due the country’s civil war and conflicts in Darfur, resulting in economic sanctions imposed by Western countries, these pyramids received very few visitors. Photos: Li Hao/GT
