Editor's Note:
If Prague is known as the “City of a Hundred Spires,” then Vyšehrad holds some of the city’s oldest. Overlooking the Vltava River, the 10th century hilltop fort (Vyšehrad translates to “high castle”) contains some of the city’s oldest surviving architecture, such as the Rotunda of St. Martin (11th century), as well as the remodeled Basilica of St. Peter and Paul. Though believed that Vyšehrad was built on Prague’s earliest settlement, the fort is now a free public park open to the city’s 1.2 million people and visitors from around the world, standing testament to the Czech Republic capital’s diverse history.
