The last male northern white rhino Sudan grazes at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Northern white rhinos, a subspecies of white rhinoceros, used to live on grassy plains in sub-Saharan Africa. The poaching crisis of the 1970s and 80s wiped out the northern white rhino populations in Uganda, Central African Republic, Sudan and Chad. Sudan, the last male northern white rhino, dies at OI Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya on March 19, leaving only two females of the endangered species in the world.

Sudan stands with the staff of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Sudan was captured at the age of 2 years old in Sudan in 1975 and taken to Dvur Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. He was relocated to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in 2009, when the zoo it used to live in fell into financial troubles. Sudan spent the rest of his life in the conservancy until his death on Tuesday.
