Editor's Note:
Today marks World Water Day and the beginning of China Water Week. This year’s theme “Wastewater” hopes to draw attention to the protection and the desperate need for sanitation among the world's water resources. Nearly one in 10 of the world's population has no access to safe water, putting them at risk of infectious diseases and premature death. The UN estimates that around 900 children under 5 years of age die each day worldwide due to diarrhea-related diseases from polluted water or poor sanitation. According to the World Resources Institute, a total 33 countries will face extremely high water stress by 2040, making it more imperative than ever for the world to take action. Photos: CFP
