Editor's Note:
It is no secret that majestic African buffalo often serve as dinner for the great predators of the plains, but they also provide a traveling smorgasbord for the birds of the Kenyan Masai Mara. Photographer Ingo Gerlach captured the interaction between these unlikely allies while in the Masai Mara in March 2017. Red-billed mackerel and other species often sit on the back of buffalo, pecking at their open wounds, picking vermin from their host's fur, and even foraging in their ears and nostrils for food, a win-win arrangement for nature’s odd couple.
