Editor's Note:
Rainer and Silke Schimpf, both photographers and marine tour guides, spotted a young killer whale when they were out at sea documenting a pod of 1,000 common dolphins hunting sardines in Algoa Bay, South Africa. The young killer whale, who they named Sira, was missing a dorsal fin and right pectoral fin, leaving it unable to hunt on its own. But the young calf appeared to be under the care of other members of its pod, who shared their food with the youngster. As fate would have it, four years later the couple were reunited with the disabled killer whale, now appeared to be the leader of its pod, during an expedition in the waters off the coast of South Africa.
