"In addition, we will try to infuse a modern interpretation on the old works as we make fun of some modern day social phenomenon, for example, the crackdown on piracy in Hitting the God of the Temple," Si added.

"The length of each program has been shortened from the original works, with redundant percussion accompaniments removed," Si explained. "Peking Opera should evolve in order to keep abreast with developments of our time, to resonate with our audience."

Although boasting a glamorous history, the future of clown roles is now under great pressure, according to Si.

"On the one hand, very few scripts are created for clown roles. On the other hand, organizers of the show often decide to remove the clown's part due to financial considerations. In addition, fewer young people want to learn the art because of the lessened stage opportunities."

"The development of different roles of Peking Opera should be balanced," added theater manager Yu. "Mei Lanfang Theater, which is a national-level performing venue, feels obliged to offer equal opportunities to different genres of Peking Opera and talented young performers. We'd like to put on more shows featuring clown roles if the new presentation proves successful."

"The discovery and staging of such a classic repertoire reflects the keen insight of Mei Lanfang Theater," commented well-known Peking Opera performer Kou Chunhua.

"It will benefit the development of the industry. The show is a lot of fun to watch and I believe it will be a real treat of laughter."
