City Under Siege, breaking new ground

According to Chan, most of his works have been crime and gangster films, close to real life, but he has always wanted to try something new. City Under Siege is his latest attempt at a wider field, combining action with special effects.

Chan said that with its futuristic backdrop and superhero theme, City Under Siege fills a void in the local film industry. "Chinese directors tend to shy away from sci-fi-themed films as we are lagging behind Hollywood in this area," he said. "We also have our own strengths," he added, saying that although Hollywood excels in special effects and big scenes, they cannot compete with Chinese filmmakers in terms of action. "I decided to combine Sunny's superpowers with Chinese kung fu, which I hope will bring a new experience to the audience."

Chan explained that when it comes to genre, City Under Siege is neither a pure action film nor sci-fi movie, but a creative "super-powered" action film.

He added that he plans to continue his work in co-productions and hopes for a more open cooperative environment in the future that provides greater scope for directors' artistic freedom.
