Modern-day China has moved beyond the corruption, poverty, and ideological madness of the past, and proved more than capable of looking after its own cultural heritage.
The British Museum, in order to ensure a greater level of cultural exchange with China, might well consider the return of at least a significant portion of its 2,300 Chinese relics to their original ownership.
China is now one of the leading global powerhouses, and is able to demonstrate to the world, as it did through the 2008 Olympic Games, that it is now a nation extremely proud of its culture and heritage.
With more and more people travelling to China, these artifacts will be just as available to a world audience in Beijing as in London or New York. Modern China is very capable of taking care of its cultural treasures. We should respect national passion and try to make redress for the sins of the past.
