If what happened in Copenhagen offers China any lesson, it is that expecting the US to assume due responsibility as part of concerted efforts may prove to be an illusion.
It seems that the US will not abandon its attempt to continue dominating world affairs and dictating the agenda, even when it is barely able to do so.
While the US keeps implying privately and publicly that China should do more in Afghanistan, just this week it was reported that the Obama administration proposes to sell arms to Taiwan. The news came on the day he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
There is agreement on the interests of the US and China being deeply interwoven. Yet resolving issues requires both sides to understand each other and be steadfast in their respective commitments.
Pressing China to make compromises that serve US interests is unlikely to yield results. China will not take responsibilities that are forced on it.
