Despite the obstacles, the journey toward prosperity and peaceful reunification is irreversible, and in the interests of people on both sides. Time is on the side of those in tune with the trend.

The pact could not have come at a better time.

It comes when Taiwan is seeking opportunities to bind its export-dependent economy more closely to the vast mainland market. It ensures that ordinary people, especially those in southern Taiwan, can enjoy the benefits as much as possible.

The timely economic embrace would ease tensions, build mutual trust and minimize the hazards of conflict created by pro-independence forces on the island.

The closer the ties grow, the less sensitive the political issues would become, and the farther the Chinese nation can go on its road toward peace, prosperity and reunification.

More haste makes for less speed. The mainland and Taiwan have been divided by the "shallow Straits" for over six decades. Now, the pace toward peaceful reunification should be carefully managed until people in Taiwan are fully ready for it.

After all, it is patience that can make the rosy picture of peace, prosperity and reunification a reality.
