When the chief reporter Henrik Bork at Sueddeutsche Zeitung  was wondering how to go about covering the Xinjiang riots on July 5, he received an e-mail from the Chinese government. The State Council Information Office not only welcomed him to conduct interviews in Urumqi, but also provided him with the phone numbers of relevant people in the local Government Information Office.

He immediately rushed to the airport for Urimqi.

The German news reporter with more than eight years' work experience in China said, "I have received a lot of the invitations to press conferences from the Chinese government, but to my surprise, this is the first time I was invited to interview and report on the spot so quickly after a major event."

"Generally speaking, in the event of such incidents, I have to manage to contact the involved myself, but this time I am particularly shocked that I can quickly get the help of relevant government departments,” he said.

According to an official with the Government Information Office of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, prior to July 7, there were more than 150 reporters from 80 news agencies to do interviews in Urumqi.

At the Urumqi Hyde Hotel, in which the majority of journalists were staying, government departments set up special information centers, offering Internet and other services for journalists.

Bork said, taking into account the scope of the incident and casualties in this incident, it is very big news for each journalist. China is now in the focus of worldwide attention.
