Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of the Global Times
Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of the Global Times, will have an online discussion on Huanqiu.com on April 28 at 2 pm.
The launch of a foreign-look newspaper grabbed the attention of China and the world on April 20. It is the Global Times English edition. AFP said that "as papers in the West struggle to survive", "China's second national English-language daily newspaper hit the streets on Monday". It also reported that the paper's launch is part of the expansion of the Chinese media, and China is looking for more ways to have its views presented around the world. Britain's Financial Times said that the launch of the paper is "a test case for whether Chinese media can win the trust of a foreign audience."
A netizen named "Sashimi" said that it is important for the Global Times English edition to position itself as a channel for the voices of common people. Last year was one filled with a number of extraordinary events that ordinary Chinese found it particularly important for the world to hear them. Another anonymous netizen commented that China should broadcast its own voice to the world, especially the true Chinese voice, and help more foreigners understand the peaceful rise of China and its growing openness.
