Some 1,147 freshwater fish species are threatened with extinction, according to an updated global "Red List" of endangered species released on November 3 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the most respected inventory of biodiversity covering more than 47,000 of the world's species.

Scientists looked into 3,120 freshwater fish this year and they found that one-third, or 1,147 of them are threatened with extinction.

In 2008, the Red List examined 44,838 species and found that 16,298 species were close to dying out.
