A cemetery in Henan Province has hired on a new security guard that is not exactly alive.

The humanoid robot, which the Chaoyang Cemetery in Luoyang says is intended to escort female employees while on their rounds during the graveyard shift.

The uniformed robo-guard either walks or can pull a rickshaw carrying one of the employees as they patrol the grounds.

Despite its unnerving latex face, one of the employees said the walking robot keeps the group company and bolsters their courage during the night.

The group of eight women in their late twenties and early thirties, were hired on in 2011 to guard the cemetery at night.

Though still unclear exactly how autonomous the automaton actually is from reports, Guangming Online reported Saturday the cemetery bought it in October for "tens of thousands of yuan."

Images of the guard's wincing expression and zombie-like gait didn't sit well with social media users.

"Isn't it even more scary to see that face in the dark?" commented one Sina Weibo user.

"In olden days, graveyard caretakers were usually ugly … maybe that's why they chose this robot," wrote another.
